Light, cold and radio-frequency: the science behind our facials

Our facials are built on three tools: specific wavelengths of LED light, controlled cold, and radio-frequency warmth. Each is used at a set wavelength, temperature or setting, and each changes how skin looks and feels in its own way.

This page explains what each one involves, what a session feels like and what research is still exploring. Our treatments are cosmetic and for general wellness, not medical care, and results vary from person to person.

LED light, wavelength by wavelength

Different colors of light reach the skin at different depths, so each is used for a different goal. Perfectio X, Sapphire X and Elevare are FDA-cleared devices; clearance covers the device, not a particular result.

  • Red and near-infrared light, widely used for a smoother, firmer-looking complexion
  • Blue light at 415 nm, used for blemish-prone skin
  • Elevare red and infrared light, in the 640–840 nm range
  • Purple mode, which combines red and blue light
  • Green and yellow modes, often chosen for a brighter, more even-looking tone or for skin that looks red
  • A calm session that pairs easily with our other facials

Controlled cold at −6 °C

Our cryotherapy is contact cooling: an applicator chilled to −6 °C, about 21 °F, moves over the skin in brief, controlled passes. A quick chill can temporarily narrow the small blood vessels near the surface, so the face looks less puffy and less flushed; as the skin rewarms, it feels tight, fresh and awake.

  • Less visible puffiness, especially around the eyes and jawline
  • A calmer look when skin is flushed or red
  • Pores that look tighter and a surface that looks smoother for a while
  • Contact cooling you can pause at any time, not a sealed chamber
  • The same −6 °C applicator used on the body in body cryotherapy

Radio-frequency warmth

Radio-frequency energy creates a gentle warmth beneath the surface of the skin. Our RF Face & Neck Facial uses it on the face and neck, then finishes with a 24K gold face and neck mask infused with black caviar.

  • A gentle, comfortable warmth that most people find relaxing
  • Skin that many people describe as firmer and smoother-looking afterwards
  • A natural partner to LED light and to the cooling of a cryotherapy facial
  • A look that builds with a series of sessions

What a session feels like

Most people find our facials calm and comfortable. Everyone is different, so treat these as descriptions, not promises.

  • LED light: a soft glow and, with some devices, a gentle warmth
  • Cold: a sharp, bright chill that softens into tingling within seconds
  • Radio-frequency: a steady warmth that builds slowly and stays comfortable
  • Skin that may look a little pink for a short while afterwards
  • No needles, nothing to recover from, and straight back to your day

What research is exploring

Research continues to explore how skin responds to light, cold and warmth. Much of that work is early, uses different devices and settings, and does not translate directly to a spa visit, so we describe what you can see and feel rather than promise outcomes.

  • How different wavelengths of light interact with skin, and at what depth
  • How cooling changes blood flow in the skin, and for how long
  • How skin responds to repeated sessions over a series
  • How light, cold and warmth compare, alone and in combination
  • Sensible limits on temperature, intensity and time for different skin types

Questions

Science FAQs

What does LED light do for the skin?

Red and near-infrared light are widely used for a smoother, firmer-looking complexion, and blue light at 415 nm for blemish-prone skin. The look builds over a series and varies from person to person. Perfectio X, Sapphire X and Elevare are FDA-cleared devices; clearance covers the device, not a particular result.

How cold does the cryotherapy applicator get?

Our applicator is chilled to −6 °C, about 21 °F. It keeps moving in brief passes, so no area stays in contact with it for long, and you can ask us to pause at any time.

Is this the same as whole-body cryotherapy?

No. Whole-body cryotherapy uses a chamber of very cold air or nitrogen vapor. Our cryotherapy is contact cooling with an applicator on your face or a chosen body area.

Does radio-frequency feel hot?

It feels warm, not hot. The warmth builds slowly during the session and should always stay comfortable; tell us if it does not, and we will adjust it.

Who should avoid these treatments?

Please tell us before you book if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a pacemaker or metal implants, epilepsy or light sensitivity, cold urticaria or Raynaud’s, open lesions or an active skin infection, or have had recent fillers, Botox or surgery. If you have a health condition, check with your physician first.

How often should I come in?

Many people start with a short series and then keep up every few weeks. We will suggest a realistic schedule at your consultation, and a package can bring the cost per session down.
